The Journey
Baku sits on the Absheron Peninsula, a finger of land jutting into the Caspian Sea, the world's largest landlocked body of water, with the Caucasus mountains to the west and Central Asia's steppes to the east. The city has been shaped by Persian, Russian, Soviet, and now global influences across twelve centuries. The old city, Icherisheher, the Inner City, is where Baku began: limestone walls enclosing the 12th-century Maiden Tower, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, and streets narrow enough to touch both sides simultaneously. Ten minutes north sits the Caspian Boulevard, where the Flame Towers dominate the skyline above. Beyond the city: the Gobustan plateau (6,000-year-old rock carvings across 100 sq km) and the Gabala highlands (cable cars rising above forested valleys in the Greater Caucasus foothills).
